In conjunction with this year's Annual Meeting, INPCS will be offering eight half-day pre-conference workshops and working groups on Friday, September 20th. These workshops are optional and registration fees are in addition to Annual Meeting registration fees. Workshops can be attended as stand-alone events, or in conjunction with the Annual Meeting. MORNING WORKSHOPS & WORKING GROUPS
"Narrative Neuropalliative Care: Workshop in Writing and Reading Skills in Clinical Care"

Description: In this interactive writing workshop, we will present core principles and practices of narrative writing in health care settings. We will discuss and demonstrate fundamental writing and creative skills that are needed for effective written communication. The workshop will combine very close readings of literary, visual, and clinical texts, intensive spontaneous writing exercises, sharing of writing in small groups, and longer form writing on participant-chosen topics. We will talk about ways to build one’s writing skill toward the wherewithal to write with skill, purpose, and ethicality in neuropalliative care.
Intended Audience: Anyone interested in using writing as a tool to promote neuropalliative care, interdisciplinary collaboration, or personal self-care by improving their writing skills.

Palliative Care for ALS: Charting a Path Forward

From Surviving to Thriving: The Role of Rehabilitation Specialists in Neuropalliative Care

Description: What do Rehabilitation Specialists do and how can they help improve quality of life? Join this workshop to understand the role of rehabilitation specialists in providing patient and family-centered care and improving quality of life. In this interactive workshop led by a taskforce of Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational, Physical Art, Music, and Dance/Movement therapists you will learn about the evidence related to person-centered assessments and therapies, participate in therapeutic activities, brainstorm about ways to reduce gaps in care, and explore opportunities for the future. The goal of the workshop is to collaboratively explore ways to build bridges, leverage the strengths of rehabilitation specialists to provide person-centered care that is meaningful, and review a proposed model of care across the trajectory of neurological illnesses (acute, chronic, or early, middle, late stages).
Intended Audience: Anyone interested in neurorehabilitation, including, but not limited to, physicians, clinicians, researchers, patients, families, and advocates.

Working Group: Non-Profit Organizations and Neuropalliative Care

Description: One of the top strategic goals of the International Neuropalliative Care Society (INPCS) is to partner with other non-profits, particularly those tied to specific neurologic illnesses, to improve neuropalliative care information and resources available to patients, families, and the public. We encourage persons associated with neurology or palliative care non-profits to join the conversation and help us to accelerate progress in this important area.

AFTERNOON WORKSHOPS & WORKING GROUPS
Working Group: Defining a Neuropalliative Care Fellowship Track

Description:As interest in neuropalliative care among trainees increases, it is essential that current and future neuropalliative training programs have the essential tools and resources needed to train our future leaders. This interactive working group aims to bring together neuropalliative clinicians to work to build consensus around the essential elements of neuropalliative fellowship training. The exact format of the session will depend on enrollment, but key agenda items include:
- Discuss the merits of a neurology track within a traditional palliative care fellowship, versus a standalone neuropalliative care fellowship
- Build consensus around core components/experiences of fellowship training for neurologists
- Identify next steps for querying a broader audience of neuropalliative providers, and disseminating specific guidelines

"Mastering the 5 Pillars of Neuropalliative Care for Parkinson’s and Related Conditions"

Description: This workshop will include the following content:
- Comprehensive Assessment and Management of Nonmotor Symptoms (including use of checklists/templates and pharmacologic/behavioral strategies; will focus on behavioral symptoms/psychosis and pain)
- Comprehensive emotional and spiritual support (includes grief, guilt, demoralization, anxiety, depression)
- Comprehensive caregiver support (includes assessing for sources of distress and providing support; often this will include hearing from carepartners about symptoms that patients downplay)
- Annual advance care planning conversations (includes how to discuss prognosis and anticipatory guidance)
- Timely referral to hospice and specialist palliative care/neuropalliative care (includes how/when to refer and how to stay involved; this may include advocating for certain treatments if they support quality of life)

Working Group: Patient/Family Advocacy

Description: There is a great need for resources to help patients and families in advocating for themselves in clinical situations, as well as an opportunity for patients and families to advocate for system-level change. In this working group we will discuss what resources are needed and develop a task force to begin to tackle the highest priority items.

Spiritual Care Workshop

Description: This workshop is for the practitioner who has to screen for, diagnose, and manage spiritual distress in their patients with life-limiting neurologic illness. Leaders in the field will take us through the basics with over 2 hours of interactive, didactic lectures. The last section will feature role-plays using case scenarios specifically curated for this workshop.
